New wipers are the cheapest safety upgrade you can fit yourself, yet they are the most-put-off household fix. Everything below takes under ten minutes per blade.
Step 1: lift and lock the arm
Pull the wiper arm away from the screen until it locks upright. Pop an old towel on the screen under the arm — a snapped-back arm can crack glass.
Step 2: identify the fitting
Most blades on UK cars use a side-pin or a top-button clip. Flat (aero) blades often come with a pack of adapters: pick the one that matches the arm you see, not the package pictures.
Step 3: release the old blade
Press the clip with a small flathead screwdriver or your thumbnail and slide the blade down the arm to unhook. Some need a quarter turn.
Step 4: slide the new blade on
Click the adapter into the new blade, line it up with the arm, and slide until you hear a clean click. Tug it once to confirm it is locked.
Step 5: test with washers
Use the washers (not a dry screen) and check for clearing across the whole sweep without chatter or streaks.
How long do they last?
