UK winters kill more batteries than any other season. Spot these signs and you can replace yours at a sensible price — before the morning it refuses to crank.
1. The engine cranks slower than usual
A healthy battery turns the starter briskly. If the engine turns over lazily, especially first thing in the morning, capacity is down.
2. Dashboard lights dim during cranking
Electrical accessories dipping when you turn the key signals the battery can no longer hold system voltage under load.
3. Frequent jump-starts
One jump after leaving the lights on is normal. Repeated jump starts mean the cells are sulphating and holding charge poorly.
4. A swollen or misshaped battery case
A puffed case means internal damage — thermal runaway from a recent overcharge or freezing. Replace; do not test-drive it.
5. Battery is older than four years
Past four years, UK batteries are on borrowed time, especially with short daily journeys. A £15 CCA test tells you the truth.
Choosing a replacement
